WE MUST ENSURE THE EXPECTATIONS OF OUR PEOPLE ARE NOT CUT SHORT — GIFT WORLU

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has charged councillors to remain steadfast in the discharge of their duties and ensure that the trust and expectations of the people are not cut short.
Hon. Worlu gave the charge in his welcome address during a capacity-building workshop for councillors organized by the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council with the theme “Understanding the Duties and Responsibilities of Councillors for the Sustainability of Our Democracy.”
The event, held at C-RON Hotels & Suites, brought together legislators and local government officials dedicated to strengthening grassroots governance and deepening democratic values.
Describing the workshop as both timely and crucial, Hon. Worlu noted that it would enhance effective legislative performance and strengthen democratic institutions at the local government level.
“It is indeed an honour as I stand before you this day to witness this workshop put together for our councillors and every one of us,” he said.
“Since we came into office, we have been doing our best to run the affairs of the council, and we felt that a day like this is necessary so we can expose ourselves to relevant laws and procedures for conducting legislative business. This event is very important, and I want all participants to take it seriously so that we can reap its full benefits and get value for money.”
Hon. Gift Worlu emphasized the pivotal role of the legislature in a democratic system, noting that no government can function effectively without a knowledgeable and responsible legislative arm.
“We cannot run a government successfully and effectively without a legislature that is grounded in the business of legislation, advocacy, and representation. The legislature also has the responsibility of oversight, and I want to encourage us to take full advantage of this opportunity. The responsibility ahead of us is enormous, and we must follow the law in policy formulation, execution, and review,” he stated.
The council chairman further urged councillors to remain dedicated, proactive, and people-oriented in their approach to governance, stressing the importance of meeting the needs and aspirations of the people.
“We must ensure that the expectations of our people are not cut short. We must work together not only to meet these expectations but to exceed them. I urge you all to be fully present, participate actively, and make this workshop interactive so that everyone can learn and benefit,” he added.
In his remarks, the Leader of the Obio/Akpor Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Rex Milla Abuchi Amadi, commended the Chairman for his continuous support and commitment to strengthening the legislative arm.
“It is with extreme delight that I stand here today. Firstly, I thank God Almighty for granting us this day, and I also appreciate the Chairman for ensuring that this workshop holds, which clearly shows his readiness to serve our people,” Amadi said.
He further stressed the need for synergy between the executive and the legislature in achieving effective governance and delivering the dividends of democracy.
“There is no way the executive can do it alone. That is why the Chairman has decided to strengthen the legislature by equipping councillors with knowledge of legislative duties and procedures. He believes in teamwork, and on behalf of the 10th Assembly, I assure him that we will take this training seriously and put it into practice to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people,” he concluded.
Also in attendance were the Vice Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Hon. Dr. Joyce Nyeche, the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Mr. Sunny Worlu, and other senior officials. Hon, HENRY AMADI – Prince Manuchimso Ekwenna, councilor representing the good people of Ward 17 Rumuolumeni.
